In terms of the Act, the Regulations pertaining thereto and the Requirements for Registration of a Medical Aid Fund, all medical aid funds operating in Namibia must be registered by the Registrar of Medical Aid Funds.
In terms of Section 5 of the Regulations, Namaf allocates practice numbers to medical practitioners and health facilities, in order that claims can be accurately identified, per medical discipline, for the proper administration and processing thereof.
A practice number is only allocated to a service provider under the condition that the provider is registered with the relevant Namibian professional Board and is in possession of the License Certificate issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Services in terms of section 31 of the Hospitals and Health Facilities Act, 1994 (Act 36 of 1994).
Certified copies of the required registration certificates must be submitted to Namaf, dated the same year that the application is made for the practice number.
Namaf monitors a service provider’s annual registration status with their Namibian professional Board.
Medical aid funds notify Namaf should they discover or suspect abuse of a member’s medical benefits, either by the member themselves or a provider.
